Bio
A left-footed forward recruited from East Brighton, John Bennett played a fragmented but resilient career punctuated by a unique two-stint tenure at Moorabbin. After showing early potential at St Kilda—highlighted by a six-goal haul against South Melbourne in 1981—he struggled with injury and selection before crossing to Footscray in 1984. Despite dominating at the lower level to win the reserves goalkicking, Bennett couldn't crack the Bulldogs' senior side consistently and returned to St Kilda the following season. His second coming at the Saints proved to be his best, where he played a career-high 16 games in 1985 and served as a capable foil to a young Tony Lockett, finishing runner-up in the club's goalkicking. Bennett ultimately departed the VFL to become a prolific spearhead for Sandringham in the VFA and a celebrated figure in suburban football.
