Bio
John Blakey began his distinguished career at Fitzroy in the mid-1980s, quickly establishing himself as a reliable contributor during a tumultuous era for the Lions. While the club faced significant on-field struggles and financial instability, Blakey remained a consistent performer until the end of the 1992 season. Seeking a fresh start and the opportunity for finals football, he crossed to North Melbourne in 1993, a move that revitalised his career and saw him become a cornerstone of the Kangaroos' lineup during their golden era.
At Arden Street, Blakey flourished as a versatile utility capable of playing off a half-back flank, on the wing, or in a run-with role against dangerous opponents. Renowned for his exceptional durability and aerobic capacity, he became a fixture in the side, rarely missing a match through injury or form. His disciplined approach and ability to generate drive out of defence made him an invaluable asset to coach Denis Pagan, playing a pivotal role in North Melbourne's premiership victories in 1996 and 1999.
