Bio
Recruited from Cooee in Tasmania, John Bonney was a skilled rover and forward pocket who arrived at St Kilda in 1967. Possessing excellent goal sense and clean hands, he established himself as a dangerous option in attack, notably featuring in the Saints' 1971 Grand Final side that fell to Hawthorn. Despite his obvious talent, Bonney’s time at Moorabbin was heavily disrupted by persistent knee injuries, which caused him to miss significant chunks of football and the entire 1973 season. He battled on until 1976, retiring with 87 games to his name as a player whose durability unfortunately never matched his ability.
