Bio
Recruited from the country town of Cohuna in northern Victoria, John Brereton was a defensive utility who managed a brief but respectable stint with Footscray in the late 1950s. Standing 180cm, he possessed the versatility to play on the flanks or in key defensive posts, making his VFL debut in 1959 as the Bulldogs sought to refresh their list following their mid-50s golden era. He played strictly as a backman, a role reflected in a career tally of zero goals from his 17 appearances, as he focused on checking opposition forwards rather than generating drive from the back half. Brereton held his spot in the senior side for two seasons but was unable to cement a permanent position, eventually departing the Western Oval at the conclusion of the 1960 season.
