Bio
Recruited from Port Melbourne District, John Carlile was a physically imposing teenager who earned an immediate call-up to the South Melbourne senior side for the opening round of the 1961 season. Already standing 183cm and weighing 90kg, he possessed a mature key-position frame that allowed him to compete straight away at the top level, holding his spot for the first four games of the year in a team led by Bob Skilton. Although his VFL stint was brief and he did not trouble the scorers during his time at the Lake Oval, Carlile later emerged as a prolific forward in the VFA. After shifting to Port Melbourne in 1963, he used his strength to devastating effect as a spearhead, booting 124 goals in just 47 games to carve out a successful state-league career.
