Recruited from Northcote Park, John Carmody was a forward who commenced his VFL career with Collingwood in 1959. He demonstrated an ability to find the goals early in his tenure but struggled to secure a regular spot in the Magpies' starting eighteen over two seasons. In search of more consistent senior opportunities, Carmody transferred to Fitzroy for the 1961 season. He played out the remainder of his brief career with the Lions, maintaining a nearly goal-per-game average, before bowing out of the league at the end of 1962 as a serviceable depth player who provided solid cover for two foundation clubs.
