Family

A tenacious and flamboyant wingman with a distinctive mop of long blond hair, John Cassin carved out a unique career path that saw him succeed across two states. He arrived at Essendon in 1971 under the father-son rule—his father Jack was a dual premiership Don—and immediately made an impact, winning the club's Best First Year Player award. Known for his "tear-through" style and willingness to break lines, he also claimed the Best Utility award in 1972. However, after four seasons at Windy Hill, Cassin made a surprise move to the SANFL, joining West Torrens where his leadership qualities saw him captain the side in 1976.

Cassin returned to Victoria in 1977 to join North Melbourne, a move that resulted in the defining season of his career. He played a pivotal role in the Kangaroos' historic campaign, playing all 27 matches—a VFL/AFL record for games in a single season that stood uniquely until 2024. This marathon run included the drawn Grand Final and the subsequent replay victory over Collingwood, where he earned a premiership medallion. A dangerous option near goal who booted 36 majors that year, he remained a regular at Arden Street until crossing to Fitzroy for a brief five-game stint to close out his league career.
