Bio
Recruited from Hutchins Old Boys in Tasmania, John Clennett holds a unique place in Melbourne history as the club’s final amateur player, appearing in the VFL without accepting payment. Standing 193cm, the promising ruckman made an immediate impact in 1972, playing 17 games and earning praise as a future star despite arriving with a lingering knee concern. However, his momentum stalled the following year due to a bizarre off-field setback—a dislocated shoulder sustained while water skiing on the Murray River. Clennett eventually returned to Tasmania in 1975 to focus on his studies, and despite Melbourne demanding a steep transfer fee from Sandy Bay and attempting to lure him back to Victoria, he never added to his tally of 39 games.
