Bio
Born in Yackandandah and recruited from Myrtleford in the Ovens & Murray Football League, John "Jack" Cooper was a capable follower who spent two seasons at Glenferrie Oval during Hawthorn's developmental years under Jack Hale. Standing 183cm, he played primarily as a ruck-rover or resting forward, demonstrating a strong ability to hit the scoreboard with 17 goals from his 20 senior games. He broke into the side in 1956 and was a consistent contributor for a team that was slowly building the foundations for future success. Despite his solid goal-kicking strike rate and utility value, his VFL career concluded at the end of 1957, after which he returned to country football, leaving the club just a few years before its breakthrough 1961 premiership.
