Bio
Recruited from the potato-farming community of Cora Lynn in West Gippsland, John Dineen was a long-striding utility known for his booming left-foot kick. He arrived at Hawthorn during the club's ascent under coach Jack Hale, debuting in the centre against Melbourne champion Laurie Mithen where he immediately displayed his ability to break away from packs. Although restricted to 17 senior appearances over three seasons, Dineen was a vital component of the club's depth, notably featuring as a half-forward in the Hawks' 1958 reserves premiership victory. He departed Glenferrie Oval at the end of 1960—narrowly missing the club's breakthrough maiden flag the following year—and subsequently enjoyed a successful VFA career with Dandenong before returning to country football. Dineen passed away in January 2025.
