Recruited from Wycheproof in country Victoria, John Elder was an aggressive and hard-running half-back flanker who had to fight for his initial opportunity at VFL level. After being overlooked following a 1954 pre-season trial, he returned to the Magpies in 1955 to earn a senior debut, where he immediately won respect for fearlessly standing his ground against Footscray hard-man Charlie Sutton. Despite this promising start, his time at Victoria Park was derailed by administrative permit issues, limiting him to just two appearances before he was delisted. He found a second footballing home at the Lakeside Oval, crossing to South Melbourne where he became a consistent contributor in defence, adding 17 games over two seasons before eventually concluding his major league career in the SANFL with Norwood.
