Recruited from Keilor, John Ellis was a smooth-moving and creative centreman known for his cool demeanour and beautiful dual-sided foot skills. After breaking into the senior side, he enjoyed a stellar 1968 campaign where he played every game, finished second in the club's Brownlow Medal count, and featured in the Grand Final loss to Carlton. However, his promising VFL career was effectively derailed by a severe knee injury sustained the following year, restricting him to just 16 games over his final three seasons at Windy Hill. After being delisted in mid-1971, Ellis embarked on a remarkable nomadic journey, carving out a successful tenure across the country that included stints with Perth in the WANFL, a premiership as captain-coach of Sandgate in Queensland, and seasons in Tasmania and the VFA.
