Teams

Originally a Geelong Under-19s junior who initially opted for local football over a VFL career, John Fitzgerald was a talented rover lured back to the Cats as a mature-age recruit in 1986. Plucked from St Joseph’s in the Geelong Football League, he broke into the senior side late in the season, playing as a small midfielder and forward who could hit the scoreboard. While his time at the elite level was limited to just eight games across two seasons, Fitzgerald cemented his status as a regional football legend after his delisting. He returned to St Joseph’s to captain their 1989 premiership side, earning best-on-ground honours in the Grand Final, and later became a celebrated coach who steered both South Barwon and Bell Park to flags in the local leagues.
