Bio
Arriving at Glenferrie Oval from Geelong College, John Gardner was a promising tall recruit who broke into the Hawthorn senior side as a 19-year-old. Standing 189cm, he was utilised primarily in the ruck, shouldering significant responsibility in the centre square during a developmental period for the club. He made an immediate impact, missing only a handful of games in his debut 1966 season and proving to be a durable contributor over his first two years. Despite establishing himself as a regular in the senior lineup, Gardner's VFL career was surprisingly brief, concluding at the end of the 1968 season after just 42 appearances in the brown and gold.
