Bio
Recruited from West Perth, John Gastev holds a unique place in history as a member of the inaugural West Coast Eagles squad who became the central piece in one of the competition's first major draft trades. After two seasons as a serviceable contributor for the Eagles, he was traded to the Brisbane Bears prior to the 1989 season, a strategic move that allowed West Coast to secure the number one draft pick to recruit Martin Leslie. While the Eagles were looking to bolster their key position stocks with the trade, Gastev arrived at Carrara and immediately elevated his standing in the league, flourishing in the warmer climate despite the Bears' initial on-field struggles.
A stylish and dashing half-back flanker who could also rotate through the midfield, Gastev became one of Brisbane's most consistent performers during the club's tumultuous formative years. His smooth ball movement and ability to provide defensive rebound were recognised immediately, seeing him win the club best and fairest in his first season in Queensland and finish runner-up in 1992. He remained a fixture in the Brisbane lineup until his retirement in 1995, concluding his career as a respected veteran who played a vital role in stabilising the Bears' defence as the club began its transition from competition easybeats to a genuine finals contender.
