Recruited from Healesville in the Yarra Valley, John "Ragsy" Goold was a dashing half-back who brought a distinct sense of style to Carlton’s defence during the Barassi era. A Melbourne Grammar product, Goold initially doubted his ability to make it at the top level, but he quickly established himself as one of the league's premier attacking defenders. Known for his long stride and flowing hair, he offered plenty of drive from the backline, earning All-Australian selection in 1966 and finishing runner-up in the Tassie Medal at the Hobart Carnival that same year.

Goold was a key member of the Blues' drought-breaking 1968 premiership side, but his off-field persona was just as famous; a fashion designer by trade, he was dubbed "Mr Elegant" by commentators for his sartorial flair. His career culminated in the famous 1970 Grand Final victory over Collingwood, where he took the field under significant duress due to a severe shin injury. Despite the physical toll, he played his part in the historic comeback win before immediately retiring at just 29 years of age, trading the football field for a life of farming and polo.
