Bio
Recruited from Colac in Victoria’s Western District, John Gorwell holds a unique distinction in Richmond history as the shortest player to ever represent the club at senior level. Standing at just 160cm (5ft 3in), the dairy farmer was a diminutive but rapid wingman who relied on the elite speed that saw him compete in heats at the Stawell Gift. Though his senior VFL career was confined to nine games during the 1955 season, Gorwell found team success at Punt Road, featuring in the club's Reserves premiership side that same year. He departed Melbourne after a single season, returning to the bush to play for Colac and later serving as captain-coach of Alvie.
