Bio
Recruited from St Albans, John Greenwood arrived at the Western Oval as a defensive prospect, breaking into the Footscray senior side in 1963. A deep defender who rarely ventured forward, he played 21 games over two seasons for the Bulldogs but struggled to cement a long-term position. After spending the 1965 and 1966 seasons out of the VFL system, Greenwood was recruited by South Melbourne, where he found a second wind at the Lake Oval. He added another 24 games to his tally over two years with the Swans, largely occupying key defensive posts, before retiring with the statistical quirk of having played 45 senior matches without kicking a single goal.
