Bio
Hailing from Inverleigh where he played alongside his father Bill, John Haygarth was a courageous footballer who rose through the Geelong Thirds and Seconds to become a key senior player. A dashing half-back flanker renowned for his ability to break lines and launch attacks with booming long kicks, he quickly became a fan favourite at Kardinia Park, where supporters affectionately knew him as "Little Johnny." He established himself as a regular fixture in the side during the late 1950s, notably impressing with his rebounding play during the 1956 finals series. Despite his obvious talent and popularity, Haygarth's VFL career was surprisingly brief; he departed Geelong at just 25 years of age following the 1959 season to pursue a successful career as a captain-coach in country Victoria, starting with Maryborough.
