Bio
Recruited from Ulverstone in northwest Tasmania, John Heathcote arrived at Princes Park in 1958 with a glowing reputation, having starred in three consecutive premierships under former Blue Arthur Hodgson. A short, stocky rover with blistering pace, Heathcote was brought in to energise Carlton’s "Mosquito Fleet" of small men and made an immediate impact, topping the club's goalkicking in his debut season. He was a natural forward-half player who crumbed effectively off the packs of ruckmen like Graham Donaldson and John Nicholls, playing with a direct, attacking style that made him dangerous around goal. After five seasons in Victoria, he returned to the Apple Isle in 1963 to captain-coach Burnie to a premiership, eventually earning induction into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.
