John Henderson was a versatile utility whose path to Victoria Park began with a rejection from the club he supported. Originally from Avenel, he unsuccessfully tried out for Essendon's thirds while working in Melbourne, only to return to country football where he was eventually spotted by Collingwood scouts. After debuting in 1957, his career came to define itself during the 1958 finals series; predominantly a flanker or defender, he was thrust into the centre for the Preliminary Final and held the spot for the famous Grand Final upset over Melbourne, instantly cementing his place in Magpie history.

Standing 187cm with surprising pace, Henderson was arguably ahead of his time, capable of playing as a tall midfielder, a running half-back, or even in the ruck. He was renowned for his ability to run off his opponent and create drive from defence, a trait that saw him poll well in the Brownlow Medal and earn state selection for Victoria. He served as club captain in 1965 before finishing his VFL career after the heartbreak of the 1966 Grand Final loss, moving on to captain-coach Yarraville in the VFA.
