Family

Recruited to Hawthorn as the club entered its golden era under John Kennedy Snr, John Hendrie developed into a versatile key position player who became a fixture of the senior side throughout the 1970s. Standing 192cm, he possessed a strong overhead mark and the capacity to operate effectively as a key forward or a relieving ruckman, providing structural balance to a lineup star-studded with midfield talent. His ability to hit the scoreboard was significant, averaging well over a goal a game across his career and offering a reliable avenue to goal when the primary forwards were well-held.

A dual premiership player, Hendrie was instrumental in the Hawks' 1976 and 1978 flag triumphs, cementing his place in the club's history during a decade of ruthless dominance. While he did not always garner the same headlines as contemporaries like Leigh Matthews or Peter Knights, his consistency and flexibility made him an invaluable asset to the coaching staff. He remained a loyal one-club player until his retirement at the end of the 1982 season, finishing his tenure just three games shy of the 200-game milestone.
