Bio
John Holligan was a mature-age recruit who made a brief but effective cameo for Essendon in the early 1900s. Born in Geelong, he eventually found his way to East Melbourne via Marylebone, a club competing in the Victorian junior ranks, and did not make his VFL debut until he was nearly 27 years old. He operated as a capable forward option, managing to hit the scoreboard in his first appearance against Melbourne and maintaining a strong strike rate throughout his short tenure. While he never established himself as a permanent fixture in the powerful "Same Olds" lineup, Holligan contributed four goals in his five senior games before departing the league following the 1903 season.
