Bio
Recruited from Mentone Grammar, John Howat was a strongly built utility who initially struggled to cement a regular spot during four seasons with Melbourne. After being delisted by the Demons following the 1992 season, he was thrown a lifeline by his former coach John Northey, who used pick 97 in the National Draft to bring him to Richmond. It was at Punt Road that the disciplined left-footer played his most consistent football, primarily operating as a close-checking defender tasked with manning some of the era's most dangerous forwards. Howat became a reliable contributor under Northey, notably breaking back into the senior side to feature in the Tigers' 1995 finals campaign. Although his senior opportunities dwindled after Northey's departure, he remained a valued clubman, co-captaining the Richmond reserves to a premiership in 1997 before moving into local coaching.
