Bio
Recruited from Yallourn in the Latrobe Valley, John Hutchinson’s VFL career was a brief but efficient cameo defined by National Service obligations. Granted a temporary permit to join Fitzroy at the start of the 1957 season, the forward made the most of his limited opportunities, booting exactly one goal in each of his three senior appearances against St Kilda, Richmond, and Hawthorn. His stint was cut short by a return to the country to complete his military training, and while he rejoined the Lions in 1958, he spent the entire year in the reserves under Len Smith, appearing in a finals campaign at the MCG. Hutchinson eventually returned to Yallourn where he became a club stalwart and captain-coach, leaving his VFL tenure as a distinct case of "what might have been" had conscription not intervened.
