Bio
A local product recruited from the Carlton Juniors, John 'Jack' Massey earned a brief opportunity in a formidable Blues side that was in the midst of a dominant era. Breaking into a lineup that had contested the previous four Grand Finals was a difficult task, and Massey was limited to just two senior appearances and a single goal during the 1910 season. While his on-field career was a footnote in Carlton's history, his subsequent life was one of immense public service. After being rejected for active combat in World War I due to a leg injury, he deployed to the Western Front as a YMCA field secretary, eventually dedicating his professional life to the organisation. He rose to become the National General Secretary of the YMCA in Australia, receiving an OBE for a lifetime of humanitarian work that far eclipsed his short stint at Princes Park.
