Bio
John Jillard was the definition of a loyal clubman, a local talent recruited from the Footscray Juniors who debuted as a 17-year-old in 1958 and anchored the Bulldogs' defence for over a decade. A tenacious half-back flanker, he was renowned for his courage and aerial judgement, often backing himself to mark against taller opponents. Jillard played a key role in the club’s run to the 1961 Grand Final and became known for his rebounding capacity, using a booming left-foot kick to turn defence into attack.
Despite finding the goals only once in his 189-game VFL career, Jillard’s consistency made him one of the first influential attacking defenders. He finally claimed the Charles Sutton Medal as the club's Best and Fairest in 1967 after finishing runner-up on three separate occasions, a testament to his reliability during a lean era for the team. His standing at the Western Oval was immortalised with his selection on a half-back flank in the Western Bulldogs Team of the Century. Following his VFL retirement, he continued to contribute to the game with stints at Latrobe in Tasmania and Ainslie in the ACT.
