Hailing from Morwell in the Latrobe Valley, John Keast was a ruckman whose brief VFL career was defined by significant travel and a complex trade web. Standing 192cm, he showed dedication by commuting from Gippsland to the Western Oval, eventually breaking through for eight senior games across the 1971 and 1973 seasons. Unable to cement a regular spot in the Bulldogs' lineup, he became a pawn in a high-profile trade deal at the end of 1973, sent to Melbourne alongside Garry Baker and Charles Pagnoccolo in exchange for star forward Greg Parke. Keast never played a senior game for the Demons; despite lining up in a practice match, he was cleared to SANFL club West Torrens just a week later. He eventually carved out a distinguished legacy outside the major league, captain-coaching Ulverstone in Tasmania before returning to Victoria to win a Best and Fairest award with Sandringham in the VFA.
