Bio
Recruited from Pascoe Vale in the Essendon District Football League, John Kemp was a distinctive red-headed utility whose VFL career is best remembered for the historic circumstances of his debut. He was selected for the senior side in Round 1, 1965 against Hawthorn at Glenferrie Oval, playing in front of an overflowing crowd in Ron Barassi’s first match as captain-coach of the Blues. Kemp played the first four games of that seminal season but struggled to cement a permanent position in the starting lineup, adding just two more senior appearances in 1966. Following his departure from Princes Park without recording a goal, he moved to the Ovens & Murray Football League, where he became a notable contributor for the Wangaratta Rovers.
