Bio
Recruited from Strathbogie in country Victoria, John Law developed into an uncompromising defender who served as a pillar of the North Melbourne backline throughout the 1980s. While he lacked the flashiness of some of his premiership-winning teammates from the previous decade, Law built a reputation on reliability and grit, often tasked with shutting down dangerous opposition forwards from a half-back flank or the back pocket. His direct, no-nonsense approach endeared him to the Kangaroos faithful, allowing him to bridge the gap between the golden era of the 1970s and the club's resurgence in the 1990s.
Law's standing at Arden Street was cemented by his elevation to the captaincy for his final two seasons in 1988 and 1989, leading the side during a challenging transitional period. A fierce competitor who rarely lowered his colours, he retired as a revered one-club player with over 200 games to his name. His legacy as a club stalwart is permanently recognised by the Kangaroos, who named their VFL Best and Fairest award the John Law Medal, honouring his decade of selfless service and leadership.
