Bio
Recruited from North Albury, John Leahy was the middle chapter of a notable family trilogy at Melbourne, joining his premiership-winning brother Brian and preceding future Best and Fairest winner Terry at the club. Standing 188cm, he was a tall prospect who spent his first two seasons on the list battling clearance issues before finally breaking into the senior side midway through 1961. His VFL career was cruelly restricted to just two appearances—a draw against Fitzroy and a loss to Hawthorn—before a severe knee cartilage injury the following year required surgery and effectively ended his time at the top level. Unable to regain his spot in a formidable Demons lineup, he transferred to Yarrawonga in 1963 to establish a business, leaving behind a brief legacy overshadowed by injury and the success of his siblings.
