Bio
Recruited from Xavier College, John Mahon was a rugged, undersized key defender who overcame a lack of height to hold down a key post in the Collingwood backline. Mahon—whose family ran the popular Yarra Hotel in Abbotsford—worked his way through the thirds and seconds before making his senior debut in 1961, earning the club's Best First Year Player award. Standing just 180cm, he relied on physical strength and dash to match taller forwards, a trait that saw him become a fixture at centre half-back. After missing almost the entire 1963 season with a severe ankle injury, he returned to play every game in 1964, anchoring the defence in the Magpies' heartbreaking Grand Final loss to Melbourne. He played one final season at Victoria Park before departing to join Prahran in the VFA.
