Bio
Recruited from Dookie College, John McArthur etched his name into Hawthorn history as a member of the club's breakthrough 1961 premiership side. He established himself as a reliable half-back flanker under John Kennedy Snr, known for his speed and a direct, no-nonsense playing style that saw him "run only in straight lines" regardless of the opposition in his path. After tasting success in the 1958 reserves premiership, McArthur became a fixture in the senior backline during the Hawks' rise, playing a key role in the 1961 Grand Final victory over Footscray. He retired from VFL football in 1963 at just 25 years of age, eventually moving into the mining industry and settling in Western Australia.
