Bio
One of the rare VFL/AFL players born overseas, John McCarthy began his life in Pontypridd, Wales, before his family emigrated to Tasmania. He was recruited from North Hobart and made his debut for North Melbourne in 1986, establishing himself as a powerfully built key position utility capable of swinging between centre half-forward and centre half-back. During his time at Arden Street, he became a regular Tasmanian State of Origin representative, notably starring with three goals in the map’s famous 1990 victory over Victoria. However, as the Kangaroos built toward their dominant nineties era, McCarthy found his preferred key forward post increasingly occupied by emerging superstars Wayne Carey and John Longmire, leading to his departure after the 1992 season.
McCarthy crossed to Fitzroy in 1993, where he immediately revitalised his career by booting 40 goals in his debut year for the Lions. He became a durable and important structural pillar for the struggling club during its final tumultuous years, often fighting against the odds in a forward line starved of supply. His place in history was secured under somber circumstances in 1996, as he was one of the 22 men who took the field for Fitzroy’s heartbreaking final AFL match against Fremantle at Subiaco. He retired following the club's merger, having carved out a respectable decade-long career as a strong-marking swingman.
