Recruited from Duntroon Military College, John McGreevy followed one of the more unique pathways to VFL football. Standing 184cm, he possessed a key-position frame well-suited to the physical demands of 1950s football and broke into the Hawthorn lineup for his debut in Round 10, 1952. Despite showing promise, his football career was ultimately secondary to his professional calling as a career Army officer. His service obligations, which spanned the Korean War era and beyond, restricted his League tenure to just three senior appearances in a single season before he returned to his military duties full-time.
