Bio
The son of Collingwood champion Jack Murphy, John Murphy established himself as a star in the SANFL before testing himself in the VFL. A key figure in Sturt's "Double Blues" dynasty under legendary coach Jack Oatey, he won three consecutive premierships before his move to Victoria became a saga in itself. Murphy was forced to sit out the entire 1969 season due to a bitter clearance dispute, finally arriving at South Melbourne in 1970. Operating as a ruck-rover, he provided experienced support in the Swans' midfield for four seasons at the Lake Oval. He ultimately returned to Sturt in 1974 to win a further two premierships, cementing his legacy as a titan of South Australian football despite his brief but solid stint in the VFL.
