Arriving at South Melbourne from Wagga Wagga, John Pitura established himself as one of the most skilful and mercurial talents of the early 1970s. A classy utility with a lethal left foot and superb balance, he became a standout performer for the Swans, culminating in a best and fairest award in 1973. However, his relationship with the club deteriorated as he sought a move to a more successful side, leading to a bitter standoff where he refused to play until a transfer could be facilitated.

The resulting move to Richmond in 1975 is remembered as one of the most significant and lopsided deals in VFL history. The Tigers parted with premiership players Brian Roberts and Francis Jackson, as well as future Brownlow Medallist Graham Teasdale, to secure Pitura's services—a massive price that heaped immense pressure on the recruit. Ultimately, Pitura struggled to replicate his South Melbourne form at Punt Road, managing just three seasons before departing the VFL. While his natural ability was never in question, his career is often viewed through the lens of this high-stakes trade that significantly altered the fortunes of both clubs involved.
