Bio
Recruited from Fairfield, John Powell initially showed significant promise in the Collingwood thirds, where he topped the under-19s goalkicking in 1956. Despite this early success in front of goal, the 184cm prospect struggled to cement a regular spot in the Magpies' senior lineup, managing just six appearances over three seasons at Victoria Park. Seeking greater opportunity, Powell crossed to Fitzroy in 1960, where he found his niche as a quality centreman rather than a forward. He became a consistent contributor for the Lions, adding 48 games to his tally over four seasons before retiring at just 26. Off the field, he is noted as the brother of Australian Olympic canoeist Adrian Powell.
