Bio
Recruited from the Wimmera town of Rupanyup, John Sampson was a country footballer who joined Footscray during the club's difficult early years in the VFL. He made his debut in 1929 but found it hard to command a regular place in the senior lineup, managing just a handful of appearances each season as he drifted in and out of the selected side. While he could not cement a long-term career at the Western Oval, he established a family link to the club that his younger brother, Alf, would later continue with great distinction as a stalwart defender. Following his brief time in league football, Sampson served in the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II.
