Recruited to Geelong in the early 1960s, John Sharrock made an immediate impact by playing a pivotal role in the Cats' 1963 premiership victory during his debut season. A classy and versatile utility, he possessed elite foot skills and the football intelligence to influence matches either as a goal-kicking half-forward or a rebounding defender. Sharrock quickly established himself as a core component of the Geelong lineup, notably finishing fourth in the 1965 Brownlow Medal count, but his career was cruelly cut short by chronic knee issues. Forced into premature retirement in 1968 at just 24 years of age, he remains a "what if" story for the club, though his status as a premiership player ensures his legacy at Kardinia Park is secure.
