Bio
Originally from Sale and recruited from Sandringham, John "Jack" Somer was a wingman whose brief VFL career was defined by opportunism during the 1911 season. He earned a call-up to the Collingwood senior side to cover an injury crisis that had sidelined key players like Dick Lee, but after just one appearance for the Magpies, he crossed to St Kilda later that year to play a solitary game for the Saints. While his time at the elite level was limited to a unique two-club cameo, Somer is remembered for his resilience off the field; he survived severe gunshot wounds to the jaw while serving on the Western Front in World War I, only to be tragically killed in a traffic accident in Albert Park shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War.
