Stats
Bio
David "John" Sparks was a diminutive rover and forward pocket recruited from Kyabram who progressed through Melbourne's Under-19 ranks to make his senior debut in 1975. Standing just 174cm and weighing 66kg, the lightweight crumber initially struggled to break into the starting lineup, playing his first three games off the interchange bench. He showed a glimpse of his potential in the final round of his debut season, earning his first start and booting four goals in a narrow one-point loss to Collingwood at the MCG. Despite that promising finish, Sparks could not consolidate his place in the senior side, spending the entire 1976 season in the lower grades before adding a final handful of appearances in 1977.
