Recruited from Rosebud on the Mornington Peninsula, John Spaull was a mature-age prospect who took the long road to Arden Street via a stint as a top-up player for Carlton's reserves. Selected by North Melbourne in the 1999 Pre-Season Draft, he spent his first year biding his time in the reserves while the senior side marched to a premiership, finally earning a debut in mid-2000. While often classified as a defender, Spaull displayed significant versatility during his brief career, drifting forward to boot five goals across his seven senior games. Ultimately unable to command a regular spot in a star-studded backline that included the likes of Mick Martyn and Glenn Archer, he was delisted at the end of 2001 and moved west to play for Claremont in the WAFL.
