Bio
John Stephens was a sharp-shooting forward who arrived at St Kilda after booting a stunning 11 goals in a single VFA match for Sandringham. Originally a goal-kicking rover, he made an immediate impact in his 1971 debut season before a severe thigh injury cruelly ended his campaign after just six games, forcing him to watch the Saints' Grand Final loss from the sidelines. He returned to full fitness the following year to become the club's leading goalkicker with 53 majors, a breakout season highlighted by a four-goal haul in an Elimination Final victory over Essendon. A talented dual sportsman who also played Sheffield Shield cricket for Victoria, Stephens was renowned for his remarkable consistency in front of the big sticks, failing to register a goal in only four of his 43 VFL appearances. Despite averaging more than two goals a game, his time at Moorabbin was brief, concluding after just three seasons.
