Bio
A mature-age recruit plucked from Old Ivanhoe Grammarians in the VAFA, John Stevens arrived at Sydney via the 1997 Pre-season Draft with a remarkable story of persistence. Having previously abandoned AFL ambitions due to heart surgery as a teenager, Stevens managed a tachycardia condition throughout his professional career that often required him to pause and regulate his heart rate mid-game. Despite this medical hurdle, he quickly established himself as a speedy left-footed winger who provided crucial run and link-up play during a successful era for the Swans. He famously etched his name into the record books during a 1999 match against Melbourne at the MCG, where he hauled in 20 marks—one of the highest single-game tallies in league history. Stevens played in finals campaigns in his first three seasons and remained a consistent contributor until his retirement in 2001.
