Bio
Recruited from Murchison in the Goulburn Valley, John Svenson arrived at South Melbourne with a reputation as a potential star after the club beat out several rivals for his signature. A strapping key position player standing 183cm, he was initially viewed as a centre half-forward solution, but his time at the Lake Oval proved disjointed. After debuting in 1953, Svenson disappeared from the VFL scene for three years, only to earn a recall for a second stint starting in 1957. Although he did not become the dominant figure early scouts had hoped for, he provided structural depth during a lean era for the Swans, battling away in the contest for three consecutive seasons upon his return before departing the league at the end of 1959.
