Recruited from Swan Hill in the Victorian Mallee, John Thomas was a tall wingman who joined Geelong during a challenging transitional period for the club. Standing 183cm with a lightweight frame, he provided a ranging option on the flanks and immediate depth for a side that struggled to the wooden spoon in his debut 1958 season. He remained a regular fixture at Kardinia Park for three years, accumulating 35 senior games as the Cats slowly looked to rebuild their list. Following his VFL career, Thomas became a respected figure in regional football, notably serving as vice-captain for Winchelsea in the Polwarth League under former teammate John Haygarth in the mid-1960s.
