Recruited from Casterton in the Western Border Football League, John Warden was a defender who joined Carlton during a golden era for the club. He made his debut in 1971 and operated primarily as a back pocket or half-back flanker, tasked with defensive duties in a team overflowing with premiership talent. Warden managed 11 senior games over two seasons but struggled to secure a permanent place in a formidable backline anchored by the likes of Geoff Southby. Consequently, he was unable to feature in the club's 1972 premiership campaign and left Princes Park at the end of that year.
