A larger-than-life character recruited from East Perth, John "JK" Watts arrived at Kardinia Park in 1963, following his great mate Polly Farmer across the Nullarbor to help deliver the Cats a premiership. Already a three-time WAFL premiership player and a serving police officer, Watts immediately anchored the Geelong defence as a flamboyant but tough full-back who could dominate the air. He played a pivotal role in the 1963 Grand Final victory over Hawthorn, holding down the key defensive post and taking a screamer of a mark, solidifying his place in club folklore—a status further entrenched by the fact he penned the lyrics to the club song, "We Are Geelong." After three seasons and 52 games, he departed for Tasmania to captain-coach Hobart to a flag, completing a unique trifecta of premierships in three different states before embarking on a prolific radio and television career in the West.
