Bio
Recruited from South Fremantle, John Worsfold was an inaugural member of the West Coast Eagles squad in 1987 and quickly established himself as the spiritual leader of the club's defence. A ruthless half-back flanker known for his uncompromising physicality and fierce attack on the contest, Worsfold's willingness to put his body on the line defined the Eagles' hard-edged culture during their early dominance. He won the Club Champion award in just his second season in 1988, signalling his immediate importance to the emerging side.
Appointed captain in 1991, Worsfold etched his name in history as the first captain of a non-Victorian side to hoist the premiership cup in 1992, repeating the feat in 1994. While his leadership was inspirational, his physical style eventually took a toll on his body, and as the game's speed increased, he found himself on the fringe of selection during his final season. In a difficult end to a decorated playing career, he was omitted from the side for the 1998 finals series by coach Mick Malthouse, prompting his retirement as one of the most significant figures in the club's history.
